Supporting Families of Children with Additional Needs or Disabilites

.....................................................................................................................................

At the meeting on 19 October Councillor Briggs made some comments which caused offense to a number of families.  We are aware that at least one of our parents has complained about this and this complaint has resulted in the following apology from Cllr Briggs, which was provided  to the complainant on Friday 21 October.  Today we received confirmation that we can circulate this apology more widely.   We remain committed to seeking changes to the policy in any event but we wanted to let you know that the below apology has been provided.

Dear Mr (name withheld for privacy), Thank you for your email and the comments made.  I wholeheartedly apologize for the upset caused to yourself and all the other parents of children and young people who use the home to school transport scheme in Bury. I was trying to say the transport to and from respite care is not a statutory requirement for the Council to provide.  The word I used was totally inappropriate and gave the wrong impression. I did not intend to offend or disrespect anyone. I appreciate the pressures parents have when they have children with special needs. I understand people's concerns about the changes being recommended in the new Policy. I should have been more sensitive in the language I used. I am sorry.

The Policy is about Home to School Transport. As was said at the meeting no changes will be made until the children and young people have had their yearly review of their needs completed. Parents are involved in this process and their needs and views are part of the assessment outcome.
I hope you will accept my apology.
